The brief

Windmill Hill City Farm, a vibrant community organisation in the heart of Bristol, wanted a website that captured the energy, variety, and community spirit of everything they do. Their previous site made it challenging for visitors to explore the farm’s wide range of offerings - including family activities, educational programmes, a working farm, café, events, and room hire - while also being time-consuming for staff to manage. 

The farm needed a website that was engaging, easy to navigate, and simple to maintain, while truly reflecting the welcoming, lively atmosphere of the organisation.

The goal was to create a bright, modern, and interactive website that enabled visitors to explore the farm’s offerings effortlessly, book events and rooms, donate to the charity and learn about career opportunities, all within a cohesive, visually engaging experience.

The approach

At 8th Dial, we delivered a full custom Shopify build focused on interactive design and visual engagement, while creating base templates to make ongoing content management easier for the Windmill Hill team. We simplified the menu structure to allow visitors to explore the farm’s many offerings intuitively, from events and classes to room hire, café information, and careers opportunities.
To bring the farm’s story to life, we incorporated subtle background images with low transparency, scrolling banners, and page animations that guide users through content in an engaging way. The site’s design combines colourful brand colours, structured layouts, and interactive elements to create an inviting, vibrant experience that mirrors the energy of the farm. 
A single integrated app manages bookings for events, room hire, and staff schedules, giving the team a single place to update everything while providing visitors with a seamless booking experience.
Additional features include an interactive farm map for easy exploration, a charity donation collection system, Mailchimp integration to manage newsletters, and a careers portal to highlight job opportunities. 
These enhancements ensured the site not only engaged visitors but also supported the farm’s operational needs.

The results

The new website provides Windmill Hill City Farm with a dynamic, engaging platform where visitors can easily explore everything the farm has to offer - from events and educational programmes to room hire, the café, and careers.

Visitors can book events or rooms and make donations through an intuitive, visually engaging interface. Within one month of launch, compared to the previous year, results show stronger engagement, with a 25.38% increase in tracked events, a 9.6% rise in clicks, and a 65.88% uplift in scroll activity.

The refreshed design reflects the farm’s vibrancy and community focus, while remaining simple to use - giving the team confidence to manage content moving forward.
